My Pilates Journey …

I started Pilates myself in 1996 as a young dancer/dance teacher looking for a way to rehabilitate my problematic knees and gain more strength and stability, without gaining muscle bulk (which had been the case from participating in a gym program). I was hooked and found that not only did my knee condition become non-existent but my dance performance also improved immensely. The Brisbane City physiotherapy practice at which I did my sessions asked me to train to become an instructor. I relished this unique opportunity to not only learn the fundamentals of Pilates but to also gain a wonderful insight into its use in a rehabilitation setting. I began teaching in 1999 as their resident Pilates instructor.  For the following 2 years I had the unique opportunity to work closely with physiotherapists in designing programs for rehabilitation, specialising in low back pain, as well as having the opportunity to work with Rugby Union players from the Queensland Reds, dancers from the Australian and Queensland Ballet Companies and performers from musical theatre and film. In a quest to increase my knowledge I undertook a 10-month course, conducted by physiotherapist Nicole Vass, with course content not only including repertoire but injury and musculoskeletal lectures.

In 2001 I went on to open my own studio with the desire to offer personalised Pilates in my local area specialising in body conditioning and rehabilitation. Progressing from a small space in Yatala, to bigger premises in Beenleigh, then a purpose built studio in Yatala, I thoroughly enjoyed the challenge and the lovely people l got to work with. During this time I became certified by internationally recognised Stott Pilates in Mat and Reformer and earned a Cert IV and Diploma V in Pilates Instruction through Pilates ITC. I was also the Queensland representative of the Australian Pilates Method Association for many years and helped to facilitate their ongoing education in South East Queensland.

Throughout this professional journey I have also endured many health concerns including several surgeries for cardiac pacemakers, two open-heart surgeries and being pregnant with my now 16-year-old son. I feel this gives me a unique insight into how your body can feel in peak physical fitness as a dancer, but also rehabilitating post injuries, surgery, illness and pregnancy.

Studio operates in Labrador on the Gold Coast, providing quality, personalised Pilates tuition.
